Scuba Diving in Tulum, Mexico

Two underwater worlds. One destination. Daily guided dives from Tulum Beach for every level — from first-timers to advanced divers.

Two worlds to explore underwater

Tulum is one of the most unique scuba diving destinations in the world — and one of the best places to scuba dive in Mexico. It's the only place where you can descend into a crystal-clear freshwater cenote in the morning and explore a Caribbean coral reef in the afternoon.

At Mexidivers, we've been guiding divers through these waters for over 20 years. Family-run, small groups, certified PADI instructors. Whether you're taking your first breath underwater or you're a seasoned diver exploring the Mayan Riviera — this is our home, and we'd love to share it with you.

Daily departures 8:30 AM & 1:00 PM · Max 4 students per instructor · English, Spanish, French

Cenote Diving in Tulum

diver in a cavern in casa cenote

Beneath the Yucatán jungle lies one of the world's largest underground river systems — and Tulum sits right above it. Diving the cenotes here means crystal-clear freshwater, visibility stretching beyond 30 meters, stalactites hanging like chandeliers, and a silence that stays with you long after you surface.

We dive all levels — from open-air cenotes perfect for first-timers, to deep advanced sites like The Pit and Angelita. Every cenote is different. Every dive is unforgettable.

All levels welcome:

  • First-time divers (Casa Cenote, Cenote Yaxchen)

  • Open Water divers (Dos Ojos, Carwash)

  • Advanced divers (The Pit, Angelita, Dreamgate)

Sites include: Dos Ojos · The Pit · Angelita · Casa Cenote · Carwash · Dreamgate · Nicte Ha · Nohoch

Reef Diving in Tulum on the Mesoamerican Reef

turtle gliding over the mesoamerican reef in tulum

Just minutes offshore from Tulum Beach, the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef stretches along the Caribbean coast — the second largest reef system in the world. Warm water, calm conditions, and an abundance of marine life make it one of the best reef diving spots in Mexico.

On a typical reef dive you might share the water with hawksbill sea turtles, spotted eagle rays, parrotfish, angelfish, and the occasional nurse shark resting beneath a coral ledge.

Depth: 8–30 meters · Visibility: 15–20 meters · Water temp: 27–29°C year-round

Cenote + Reef Diving in Tulum

The full Tulum dive experience in one morning.

Can’t choose between cenote and reef diving? You don’t have to. One of our most popular scuba diving options in Tulum combines both underwater worlds in a single morning: a cenote dive followed by a reef dive, back-to-back.

We start at 8:30 AM with a cenote dive. For first-time divers, we usually choose Casa Cenote, a calm, open cenote that is perfect for Discover Scuba Diving. For certified divers, we can match the trip to your level with sites like Carwash, Dreamgate, Nohoch.

After the cenote, we return to the dive shop, switch gear and head out by boat to the Mesoamerican Reef. The second dive brings you into warm Caribbean water with coral gardens, tropical fish, sea turtles and reef life.

Two underwater worlds. One morning. Back before lunch.

Available for first-time divers and certified divers

Tulum — One of the Best Scuba Diving Destinations in Mexico

When divers talk about the best scuba diving in Mexico, the conversation usually starts with Cozumel. But Tulum offers something no other diving destination in the country can match — the combination of Caribbean reef diving and cenote diving in the same place.

The Yucatán Peninsula sits above one of the world's largest underground river systems, making Tulum the only destination where you can dive a freshwater cenote in the morning and the Mesoamerican Reef in the afternoon. As a scuba diving destination, it's genuinely in a category of its own.

Whether you're planning your first dive trip or adding Tulum to a Mayan Riviera itinerary — this is a stop worth building your trip around.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Yes. Tulum is one of the most unique places for scuba diving in Mexico because you can dive both freshwater cenotes and Caribbean reefs in the same destination. The cenotes offer crystal-clear water, cavern formations and light beams, while the reef brings coral gardens, tropical fish, turtles and warm ocean conditions.

  • Not always. If you are not certified, you can join a Discover Scuba Diving experience with an instructor. For certified reef dives and most cenote diving tours, you need at least an Open Water certification. Some deeper cenotes, like The Pit or Angelita, may require Advanced Open Water or previous experience.

  • Cenote diving takes place in freshwater sinkholes and cavern systems, with clear visibility, limestone formations, haloclines and natural light beams. Reef diving takes place in the Caribbean Sea on the Mesoamerican Reef, where you can see coral, tropical fish, turtles, rays and other marine life. Both are very different, and many divers choose to do both.

  • Yes. Beginners can try scuba diving in Tulum through our Discover Scuba Diving program. We usually use calm, beginner-friendly conditions such as Casa Cenote or a shallow reef, depending on the weather and your comfort level. No previous experience is required.

  • Yes. One of our most popular options is the cenote + reef diving combo, where you start with a cenote dive in the morning and then head out by boat for a reef dive on the Mesoamerican Reef. It is available for both first-time divers and certified divers, with the sites matched to your level.

  • Scuba diving in Tulum is possible year-round. Cenotes usually have excellent visibility throughout the year, while reef conditions depend more on wind and sea conditions. The calmer ocean season is often from November to April, but beautiful reef dives are possible in many months of the year.

  • Most scuba diving tours include professional guide or instructor service, scuba equipment, tanks, weights and dive planning. Depending on the tour, transportation from the dive shop may also be included. Cenote entrance fees and special transportation are not always included, so we confirm the details before your trip.
