What You’ll Do in the Advanced Open Water Course

Your deep adventure dive helps you understand how depth affects your body, air consumption, buoyancy and awareness underwater. In Tulum, this dive may take place on the reef or at an appropriate advanced dive site, depending on conditions.

Deep Dive

You’ll practice compass navigation, natural navigation and better orientation underwater. This dive helps you feel more independent and confident when exploring dive sites with a guide or buddy.

Underwater Navigation

Peak Performance Buoyancy

Fine-tune your buoyancy, breathing and body position underwater. This is one of the most useful dives for anyone who wants to become smoother, calmer and more efficient in the water.

Reef, Boat or Drift Diving

Depending on ocean conditions and your goals, we can include a reef, boat or drift-style adventure dive. This helps you gain more experience diving from boats and reading real ocean conditions in Tulum.

Instructor-Chosen Adventure Dive

Your fifth adventure dive is selected with your instructor based on ocean conditions, your experience level and what will help you grow most as a diver. Options may include fish identification, drift-style diving, search and recovery, night diving when available, or another suitable adventure dive.

After completing the five adventure dives and required knowledge reviews, your PADI Advanced Open Water Diver certification is processed digitally. This certification helps you access deeper dive sites and continue your training toward Rescue Diver, specialties or Divemaster.

Important Note About Cenotes

The standard PADI Advanced Open Water Course is conducted in open water environments, following PADI training standards. In Tulum, this usually means ocean reef dives and other suitable open water training sites.

Because cenote availability depends on course requirements, conditions and instructor planning, cenote diving is not guaranteed as part of the standard Advanced Open Water course.

If you are interested in adding cenote diving to your training trip, please ask us before booking. We’ll let you know what is possible based on your experience, schedule and safety standards.
